Effects & Signal Chain

Notes

Live performance, Palladium NYC, October 31, 1978. Zappa's main live rig at this time was a heavily modified Gibson SG Special into a Marshall 100-watt Super Lead, often with a Mu-Tron Bi-Phase and wah in the signal chain. Effects were mostly from pedals, not amp. No evidence of studio overdubs for this live recording.

British crunch with pronounced midrangerich sustain and harmonic overtonesarticulate note separationtouch-sensitive responseslightly nasal, filtered character (wah in fixed position or subtle movement)dynamic picking attackmoderate gain, not high-gain saturationclear, present upper midstight low end, not boomycomplex, layered modulation texture (phaser/bi-phase audible)

Difficulty

The riff requires advanced rhythmic precision, dynamic picking, and real-time manipulation of effects (wah and phaser), making it challenging for most players.
