Notes

Studio recording, American Beauty album (1970). Garcia played pedal steel on 'Candyman' but the riff/verse clean electric is Stratocaster into Twin Reverb. No evidence of envelope filter, phaser, or other modulation effects on the studio riff section; those were used live in later years. No evidence of outboard reverb or delay on the studio riff section.

Difficulty

The riff requires clean double-stops, subtle dynamic control, and precise timing to achieve the signature off-kilter feel, but does not involve advanced techniques or fast passages.
