Effects & Signal Chain

Notes

Studio recording, 1977 (Van Halen I sessions). Eddie's signal chain was famously minimal: guitar straight into a cranked Marshall Plexi via a Variac, with an MXR Phase 90 for some solos. No pedal distortion, no chorus or delay on this track. No effects loop. All effects are front-of-amp. Pickup selector is bridge only (single humbucker).

Difficulty

The solo is considered expert-level due to its high speed, technical phrasing, and advanced Van Halen signature techniques such as rapid alternate picking, tapping, and dynamic articulation.
