Effects & Signal Chain

Notes

Studio recording, 1974. Clapton used a stock Fender Stratocaster and a Fender Vibroverb amp for the riff/rhythm section of 'I Shot the Sheriff' on the 461 Ocean Boulevard album. No evidence of outboard pedals or effects for the riff section; minimalist signal chain. No evidence of wah or modulation in the riff section (wah is used in solos/live, not on the original studio riff).

Difficulty

The riff requires tight, syncopated reggae rhythm playing with precise muting and dynamic control, but does not involve advanced lead techniques or fast passages.
