Notes

Studio recording, 1978-1979. Mark Knopfler used his red Fender Stratocaster for the solo on 'Lady Writer' as confirmed by Equipboard and period video evidence. The amp was a Music Man 212-HD One Thirty, which was his main studio amp for the first two Dire Straits albums. Effects were minimal but included compression and analog delay for slapback. No evidence of heavy distortion pedals; overdrive is from amp and touch. Pickup selector likely in position 2 or 4 for quackier, glassy tone.

Difficulty

The solo requires advanced fingerstyle technique, precise dynamic control for percussive attack, and fast, articulate melodic runs, making it challenging for most guitarists.
