Effects & Signal Chain

Notes

Studio recording, 1967-1968. Guitarist Francis Rossi used a Vox Phantom VI with single-coil pickups into a Vox AC30 amp for the main riff. No evidence of pedals used in the studio; the signature effect is a pronounced phasing/flanging sound, likely achieved via studio tape flanging. No evidence of live pedal use for this effect in 1968. All gear and effects are specific to the original studio recording.

Difficulty

The riff is rhythmically straightforward but requires precise picking and timing to maintain clarity through the swirling modulation effect. The main challenge is keeping the riff tight and articulate with the pronounced phasing/flanging.
