Notes

Studio recording, 2003-2004. Mick Thomson played the main riff on the Ibanez MTM1 with EMG 81 bridge pickup into a Peavey 5150 II head. Jim Root used a Fender Telecaster with EMG pickups and an Orange Rockerverb 100 for his rhythm tracks, but the main riff is primarily Mick's tone. No evidence of time-based or modulation effects on the riff section; tone is extremely tight and dry. No evidence of pedal-based distortion; all gain from amp and possibly a boost/overdrive pedal for tightening.

Difficulty

The riff requires fast, accurate alternate picking with tight palm muting and precise staccato rhythm, making it challenging for most players.
