Notes

Studio recording, 1984-1985 for 'Brothers in Arms'. Mark Knopfler is widely documented to have used a Fender Stratocaster into a Music Man amp for the clean riff of 'Walk of Life'. No evidence of pedal use for the clean riff; all effects are likely amp-based or from the studio mix. Pickup selector is in position 2 (bridge + middle) for the signature quack. No evidence of compression or chorus in the studio version.

Difficulty

The riff requires intermediate to advanced fingerstyle technique at a fast tempo, with precise muting and dynamic control to achieve the clean, percussive sound. The articulation and speed make it challenging for less experienced players.
